“Freiderich Humbert, born January 30, 1728 in Neu Keltenbach, Hessen, of German parentage, and of French (Lorraine) ancestry, (his grandfather, Antoine Humbert, or D’Hombre, born April 13, 1665, having emigrated after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, in 1685 from Nancy to Marburg, Hessen, and after-ward to Keltenbach, on the Rhine, founding later on the Neu Keltenbach, where he married Marie Brideau and where he appears to have been a man of considerable importance, a furrier, as was his son, Anthony Humbert, who was born August 4, 1690, married Barbara Ditmar, daughter of Friedrich Ditmar), married, June 3, 1750, Susanna, daughter of Wilhelm Hetzel, of Neu Kelterbach.”(l) Friedrich Humbert, his brother, Jacob Philip (Philip Jacob), Heinrich Hetsel, undoubtedly a relative, Joh. Christoph Weysbach (whose sister Magdalena married Wilhelm Humbert,) and Abraham Konig, whose daughter Margaret, married Peter Humbert, emigrated to Philadelphia in the ship “Janet”, Captain William Cunningham, from Rotterdam, qualifying on October 7, 1751. Frederick Humbert settled in Frederick County, Maryland, where he remained until 1778, at which time he purchased land in Ayr Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Frederich occurs in a return of property in Bedford County, in 1779 as possessing 250 acres of land, 4 horses and 6 cattle.(3)

In the name of God amen: I Friedrick Humbert, of Air town­ship in the County of Bedford and State of Pennsylvania, Yeoman, being of sound mind, memory and understanding but concerning the uncertainty of this life think fit to make this my last will and testament in the following manner, viz: I recommend my soul into the hands of God, and my body to Earth to be buried in a christian manner   —   and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this life. I give, devise and bequeath it of the same in the following manner and form   —   First my will is, that my hereafter named children, that is to say, Friedrick, John, Maria Eva, Barbara, Elizabeth, Peggy, George, Jacob, David, Solomen, Catharina, Sussana and William shall have my Estate share   —   share alike in the following form and manner as my son John decead, but has left three sons they shall have their father’s share   —   Further I will that whereas my toughter Barbara has the misfortune of having two boys named Abraham and David who as it is soppos’d nevr will be abel to support themselves   —   therefore my will is that my Executors taking the said Barbara’s share and keeping it in good hands and assisting the mother and boys as circumstances may require and if the said Barbara should deces then the remainder to be kept in safe hands for said boys and as for my as for my toughter Catharina as she is of a sickly constitution I allow her to have over and above her share that bed and beddings with bedsted that stands in the stove room   —   as also her share of her legacies for herself and children she may lay it out to her best advantage the rest to be equally devided between the rest of my children by my hereafter named Executors   —   And now Lastly I do constitute, make and ordain my son in law Abraham Lesher and my son George Humbert of this my last will and testament my Executors   —    they said Executors after having sold my personal Estate may with the major part sell my real Estate, both in Air township County above said   —   as also my real Estate in Fayette County state above mentioned — the aforesaid Executors will make a good tittle   —   I am in hopes both Executor and legaties will know when to sell   —   And I do hereby disallow, revoke, disannull all former bequeths or Executors in anyways, before named, ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the tenth day of April in the year one thousand eight hundred and nineteen. In a supply tax of Ayr Township, Bedford County, 1783, occurs Frederick Humburd with 300 acres, 8 horses, 6 cattle and 1 sheep. (4) On June 18, 1785, Frederick received a warrant for 346 acres, surveyed on April 1, 1791.(5) The 1790 census for Bedford County list Frederick Humbert with his sons Frederick, Jr. and John. Frederick Humbert made his will April 10, 1819, in which he divided his estate equally between his children namely: Frederick, John, Maria Eva, Barbara, Elizabeth, Peggy, George, Jacob, David, Solomon, Catherine, Susanna and William.  “as my son John decead, but has left three sons they shall have their father’s share.”(6) Frederick, Jr., David and William moved west, settling in Ohio, George and Solomon remained in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. His daughter, Elizabeth, married Abraham Lesher who was appointed executor, along with George Humbert, of Frederick’s will. Frederick Humbert died January 2, 1832.( 7) Information concerning John Humbert is very sparse, besides his being listed in the 1790 census with a wife and two sons under the age of 16 years, his record of two periods of service during the Revolutionary War is preserved(4) Pennsylvania Archives, Series 3, Volume 22, Page 241(5) Department of Community Affairs, N Book, Page 122(6)  Bedford County, Will Book 3, Page 7 (7)  Reading Adler, February 21, 1832

John Humbert is listed in Air Township tax returns of 1791, 1792, 1793, and 1795, apparently he died in 1795 as he does not appear hereafter. Nothing is known of his sons until February 14, 1831 when David Humbert of Franklin County, Pennsylvania made a quit claim deed to “all his right, title, interest and property estate and demand which I David Humbert, have or may hereafter have to my grandfather, Frederick Humbert’s Estate” (8) unto David Fore. Said deed was recorded January 17, 1832. David Humbert appears in the 1850 census of Peters Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania with a wife Sarah and children: Mary, Thomas, George, Hannah and Benjamin. David was born in Ayr Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania on February 6, 1787 the son of John Humbert grandson of Frederick Humbert. He was married to Sarah, maiden name unknown, in 1825 and moved to Franklin County, where he worked as a wagon maker, a trade probably learned from his uncle, Solomon Humbert who had a shop in McConnellsburg. David died “December 9, 1867 at the age of 80 years, 10 months and 3 days” (8k). In the 1870 census Sarah is living with their son Benjamin, his wife, Cynthia and their son, George.

Sarah Humbert lived to the age of 80 years and 7 months, dying at the home of her daughter, Mary, Mrs. Andrew Hays, in McConnellsburg, PA., on Monday, May 30, 1881(9).  Mary, born June 15, 1826, married Andrew Hays, she died December 3, 1890   Thomas, born September 14, 1828 George, born April 1, 1831 and died April 27, 1853 Hannah, born May 11, 1834, married Amos McCulloh, she died June 27, 1907 at Morrison, Illinois. Benjamin, born March 7, 1843, married Cynthia Ramer, he died November 23, 1913 at North Braddock, PA. Thomas Jefferson Humbert was born at Fort Louden, Franklin County, Pennsylvania on September 14, 1828 (10) and in early life moved to Ayr Township, Fulton County, Pennsylvania. He was married to Miss Rebecca Truax of Thompson Township by Rev. Jacob Waters on March 23, 1853.(11) (Rebecca Truax the granddaughter of Stillwell Truax who served as an ensign in Captain Jacob Hendershot’s Company, First Battalion of the Bedford County Militia.(12) This Battalion took part in a successful attack at Lawrence’s Island near Philadelphia on February 17, 1777.)  “Thomas and Rebecca went to housekeeping on the farm where he spent the remainder of his life. Thomas besides being a successful farmer, was a weaver by trade and worked at the woolen mill just south of Webster Mills.

On September 19, 1864, at the age of 36 years, Thomas was drafted into Company F, 56th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry and received his training at Camp Biddle, Carlisle, Pa., he was discharged June 2, 1865 at a camp near Washington, D.C.” (14)

      Thomas Humbert on returning home to his wife and six children, took an active interest in the educational affairs of his Township and served on the school board for many years. Thomas and Rebecca were the parents of seven children.

      Thomas Jefferson Humbert married Rebecca Truax on March 23, 1853. She was born March 16, 1827 and died November 8, 1911. He died October 5, 1903.
